Arthurian Medievalism in Quest for Camelot

Image
(1)      Quest for Camelot ( 1998) is an animated movie about the main character, Kayley going on a quest to find Excalibur after it was stolen from King Arthur by one of his knights of the Round Table, Sir Ruber. Along the way, she meets various characters who will accompany her on her quest to return Excalibur to Camelot. She must find the sword before Sir Ruber, and save the kingdom from being reverted back to the early dark days.  Oh, Oh, Oh, it's Magic      There is a lot of magical represented in this movie, from the sword, the potions, and the creatures included in the film. The first representation I'll include is the sword. In the beginning of the movie, Ruber attacks King Arthur during a meeting of the  knights of the Round Table and when Ruber's morning star meets Excalibur lightning and purple light shines from the sword and the force throws him across the table.      The next example is the potion used by Ruber to crea...

Arthurian Medievalism in Pop Culture: Sky Anytime Plus Adverts

Image
About Sky   Sky is a U.K. television service that, between 2007 and 2010, offered two on demand services: Sky Anytime and Sky Anytime Plus (4). According to Radio and Telly , the Anytime service “[used] space Sky Anytime Plus Logo (3) on the Sky box’s hard disk and [captured] a selection of Sky TV [programs] and movies that [were then] downloaded to the box overnight.” An advanced version of Sky Anytime turned into Sky Anytime Plus, which offered “video-on-demand over the Internet” and “over 500 movies and a large collection of TV shows that [could] be viewed on-demand” (4). To attract its audience in the U.K. to buy Sky Anytime Plus, Sky created five short adverts referencing the legendary characters of King Arthur and some of themes in Arthurian romances, for if the advanced television service was good enough for the greatest legendary king of Britian, it must be good enough for the average television viewer. However, only three of the five adverts will be focused on for t...

Arthurian Medievalism Takes On The Battleground of The Gods

Image
What is Smite?     Smite, The Battleground on the Gods, is a video game which mashes famous religious and mythological beings together in the ultimate battle arena.  To better understand the developer's, Hi-Rez Studios, interpretations of some of the classic Arthurian characters within their game, it is beneficial to have some foundational knowledge of the game and its mechanics. Smite is described as a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) in which players choose to play as a god or goddess from various classic religious pantheons. Teams of five face off in a large arena divided into three main lanes, and use a combination of team-play, individual-play, tactics, and resource management to attempt to push the enemies back to their base and defeat the titan which guards it. There are five separate classes of characters which are: mages (high damage abilities but low defense and health), hunters (similar to mages but rely more on standard attacks rather than ability ...

Arthurian Medievalism in The Adventures of Merlin

Image
(1) The introductory title of Merlin   In a land of myth and a time of magic...   The Adventures of Merlin is a TV adaptation of the Arthurian world which first aired on BBC in 2008 and ran for five seasons, ending in 2012 on Christmas Eve (1). In the reimagined Arthurian World of Merlin , rather than being Arthur’s wizened wizard mentor, Merlin is the young Prince Arthur’s agemate and his manservant. Their relationship to one another is the beating heart of the show, creating a major difference in the show versus the original tales: Merlin is, as the title suggests, entirely focused on the character of Merlin (and, by extension, Arthur), rather than jumping from knight to knight from episode to episode.  For a little more context, here's the trailer for season one: However, from a librarian character named Geoffrey of Monmouth to the episodic nature of the show’s format itself, Merlin is still chock-full of references to the original incarnations of the Arthurian Wor...
